Free radicals are molecules missing electrons, hence becoming unstable. These molecules consistently search for other electrons from other molecules and in larger scope, other cells. Free radicals can be derived from internal and external source. Internal source of free radicals may be derived from metabolism of substances in our body. Some substances, in state of excessive amount may turn into toxic substances and forming free radicals. Example of these substances is glucose. In normal amount, glucose is metabolized into energy of our cells. But in state of excessive amount of glucose, for example in diabetes mellitus state may harm metabolism of other substances and resulting in free-radical formation. External source of free radicals are environmental stress, sunlight exposure, cigarette smoking and etc. Sunlight exposure, especially the unprotected and too frequent one causes alteration in skin cells and connective tissues, forming free radicals and resulting in early aging. Cigarette smoking and pollutants cause free radicals because the toxic substances contained inside. Either internal or external source of free radicals may be hazardous for our health.
HAZARDOUS EFFECT OF FREE RADICALS
Free radicals may be harmful for other molecules or other cells. Free radicals will remain unstable until they found other molecules to be paired with and forming new molecules. In the search of other molecules, free radicals may disrupt integrity of cells membrane, resulting in damage in cells and worse, cell death. This process is considered as starting point of aging, organ damage and recently, cancer. Unstopped process of free radical may disrupt significant amount of cells, resulting in various disease.
Harmful effect of free radicals may be prevented by supplying substances that may donor electrons to free radicals, making the free radicals stable and no further disrupting other cells. These substances are well-known as antioxidant. Antioxidant transfers electrons to be paired with free radicals, making free radicals stable. By providing electrons, antioxidant prevent harmful effect of free radicals, and prevent cells damage and death. Naturally, our body is equipped by natural antioxidant that may reduce level of free radicals. But in state of oxidative stress, when level of free radicals exceeds ability of natural antioxidant, cells damage start to take place. Therefore, our body needs supplementary antioxidant to support activity of natural antioxidant and prevent cells damage. Astaxanthin is a type of carotenoid found in the natural source, mainly from fruits and vegetables. The conjugated double bonds are responsible for antioxidant function of astaxanthin to reduce a reactive oxidizing molecule. By reducing reactive oxidizing molecule, astaxanthin protect cells from damage and neutralize free radicals. The conjugated double bonds also affect potency of astaxanthin, resulting in more potent and more powerful antioxidant profile compared to former antioxidant :
