IndicationSepticemia, bacteremia, peritonitis, meningitis; infected burn wound; UTI; lower resp tract, skin & soft tissue, abdominal & biliary, & bone & joint infections; infections in hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis & continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) patients.

Contra IndicationHypersensitivity to cephalosporins.

DosageAdult 1-6 g daily IV or IM. UTI & less serious infections 500 mg-1 g 12 hrly. Most infections 1 g 8 hrly or 2 g 12 hrly. Severe infections esp in immunocompromised patients including neutropenia 2 g 8 hrly or 12 hrly. Fibrosis cystic 100-150 mg/kg/day in 3 divided doses. Infants & childn >;2 mth 30-100 mg/kg/day in 2-3 divided doses. Max: 6 g daily in 3 divided doses. Neonates & infants

Special PrecautionPatients w/ type 1 hypersensitivity reaction or hypersensitivity to penicillins. Prolonged use may cause overgrowth of nonsensitive micro-orgamisms. Pregnancy & lactation.

Adverse ReactionPhlebitis or thrombophlebitis, maculopapular rash or urticaria, fever, angioedema, anaphylactic reactions (bronchospasm or hypotension), diarrhea, nausea, abdominal pain, thrush, colitis, candidosis vaginitis,headache, dizziness, pares-thesia.

Drug InteractionAminoglycosides & vancomycin.
